[New Blog] 7-Month-Old Infant Recovers from Skin Necrosis Without Skin Graft

【Case Report】Skin Necrosis from IV Infiltration in a 7-Month-Old Infant Successfully Treated Without Skin Grafting

We have published a new blog post featuring a case of a 7-month-old infant girl who developed skin necrosis around her right wrist due to a large-volume IV infiltration during hospitalization for influenza.

Despite multiple treatments with topical ointments and gauze dressings at other hospitals, the wound worsened and progressed to black necrosis. One facility even advised the parents to undergo an immediate skin graft, causing significant distress.

At our clinic, we carefully explained that the condition could be treated using Natsui-style moist wound healing, without the need for skin grafting, gauze, or disinfection. We assured the family that the necrotic tissue would naturally soften and resolve within two weeks, followed by full epithelialization. Daily showers and baths were permitted from the beginning.

We are pleased to report that the wound healed completely and beautifully, without any skin grafting.

Given that this was my first experience treating skin necrosis caused by IV infiltration, I consulted with Dr. Makoto Natsui, a leading expert in moist wound healing. His prompt and kind confirmation of our treatment approach was incredibly reassuring.
